چکیده

The life spans of demersal species of fishes occurring in deep-waters are much longer and their potential growth rates much lower than those of related shallow water species. As a result, deep-sea demersal fish species are more vulnerable to exploitation. This is because low growth rates relative to the available market discount rate for capital makes it desirable for fishing firms to mine, rather than sustainably exploit, these resources even in the absence of fisheries subsidies. However, it is common knowledge that governments around the world do provide subsidies to their fishing industries. The objective of this contribution is to estimate the global amount of subsidies paid to bottom trawl fleets operating in the high seas, i.e., outside of the Exclusive Economic Zones of maritime countries. Our study suggests that fisheries subsidies to these fleets stand at about US$152 million per year, which constitutes 25% of the total landed value of the fleet. Economic data for bottom trawlers suggest that the profit achieved by this vessel group is normally not more than 10% of landed value. The implication of this finding is that without subsidies, the bulk of the world’s bottom trawl fleet operating in the high seas will be operating at a loss, and unable to fish, thereby reducing the current threat to deep-sea and high seas fish stocks. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The Impact of Subsidies on the Ecological Sustainability and Future Profits from North Sea Fisheries

BACKGROUND This study examines the impact of subsidies on the profitability and ecological stability of the North Sea fisheries over the past 20 years. It shows the negative impact that subsidies can have on both the biomass of important fish species and the possible profit from fisheries. The study includes subsidies in an ecosystem model of the North Sea and examines the possible effects of e...

Calls to curb deep-ocean trawling

Scientists have called for subsidies paid out to a handful of national deep-sea fishing fleets to be stopped immediately in yet another plea to prevent permanent ecological damage and the extinction of some of the longest living creatures on the planet. Without the $150 million of subsidies paid annually, deep-sea fisheries would operate at a loss of $50 million, researchers believe. But the te...

The Seascape of Demersal Fish Nursery Areas in the North Mediterranean Sea, a First Step Towards the Implementation of Spatial Planning for Trawl Fisheries

The identification of nursery grounds and other essential fish habitats of exploited stocks is a key requirement for the development of spatial conservation planning aimed at reducing the adverse impact of fishing on the exploited populations and ecosystems. The reduction in juvenile mortality is particularly relevant in the Mediterranean and is considered as one of the main prerequisites for t...

The effects of 118 years of industrial fishing on UK bottom trawl fisheries.

In 2009, the European Commission estimated that 88% of monitored marine fish stocks were overfished, on the basis of data that go back 20 to 40 years and depending on the species investigated. However, commercial sea fishing goes back centuries, calling into question the validity of management conclusions drawn from recent data. We compiled statistics of annual demersal fish landings from botto...

Assessment of the Fish Resources of Southeast Asia, with Emphasis on the Banda and Arafura Seas*

Following a brief presentation of marine catch trends in Southeast Asia, some biological peculiarities of the stocks upon which these fisheries rely are discussed. Two empirical loglinear models are presented allowing rough estimation of potential yield of small pelagic fishes fish from primary production, and of demersal fish from mean water depth and primary production. These models are appli...
